Kisatchie National Forest in Alexandria, LA

Kisatchie National Forest

Kisatchie National Forest is 604,000 acres of land and the only National Forest in Louisiana. The National Forest is mostly longleaf pine forests with some prairies. The area has several carnivorous plants such as the pale trumpet and rose pogonia orchid. 

Alexandria is encircled by Kisatchie National Forest. There are many miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding throughout the forest. Contact the Forest Service if you have questions about activities. Calcasieu Ranger District is the closest ranger district to Alexandria. 

Kisatchie National Forest was created to preserve regional biodiversity. The forest is home to several rare and endangered species such as the Louisiana pearl shell mussel and the non-venomous Louisiana pine snake. 

Louisiana History Museum in Alexandria

Located in Downtown Alexandria, The Louisiana History Museum presents the history of Louisiana, specifically Central Louisiana. The current museum building in Downtown Alexandria was the Alexandria Public Library from 1907 to 1971. 

There are over 50 exhibits about regional geography, Native Americans in Louisiana, the Louisiana Purchase, the creation of the Civil War dam on the Red River, politicians from Central Louisiana, and more on display for patron. 

They also have a large collection of vintage photographs and postcards of Central Louisiana.
